When Yumiko (Makiko Esumi) was a child, her grandmother always ran away from home, insisting on returning to the countryside from the city to spend her old age, and one time she never came back. Later, Yumiko got married and had children, living a poor but happy life. One day, her husband Ikuo (Tadanobu Asano) left unexpectedly. After being a widow for a few years, Yumiko married Minxiong (Tsuyoshi Naito) with her young son. It was a remote small village surrounded by mountains and the sea. From then on, she lived a stable, happy and simple life, day after day. But in her heart, there has always been an lingering question buried. She doesn’t understand why Ikuo committed suicide. A series of unexpected events caused Yumiko to run away from home. When she came to the beach, she was thinking hard and couldn’t get rid of it. Minxiong chased her and answered Yumiko’s lingering questions.
由美子（惠美真希子 飾）小時候，奶奶總是離家出走，堅持要從城市回到農村安度晚年，一度再也沒有回來。後來由美子結婚生子，過著清貧但幸福的生活。有一天，她的丈夫鬱悶（淺野忠信 飾）意外離開。守寡幾年後，由美子帶著年幼的兒子與敏雄（內藤剛 飾）結婚。那是一個依山傍海的偏僻小村莊。從此，她過著安穩、幸福、簡單的生活，日復一日。但她的心裡，一直埋藏著一個揮之不去的疑問。她不明白鬱生為何自殺。一連串的意外事件導致由美子離家出走。來到海邊，她苦苦思索，無法擺脫。敏雄追著她，回答了由美子揮之不去的疑問。
