The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Daniel James Brown. It tells the story of several boys from ordinary families at the University of Washington who formed a rowing team in 1936. They won all the way and defeated Harvard University and Yale University in the competition, as well as the strongest rowing team of the host country Germany, and finally won the Olympic gold medal.
